HAMILTON, N.Y.-- Senior Jenelle Ferri made six saves in her first career start as the Orangewomen defeated Colgate, 2-1, in a non-conference match Wednesday at Van Doren Field. Syracuse is now 9-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the BIG EAST, while Colgate is 10-7-0 and 4-1-0 in the Patriot League.
Ferri earned her first career win in the contest. She saw action earlier this season, playing the second half versus Albany, but did not face a shot.
Against Colgate, the Orangewomen earned early scoring opportunities. Ten minutes into the contest, junior Helen Fox received a pass in the midfield and raced into the Colgate’s third of the field and blasted a shot from short range that was stopped by Colgate keeper Luisa Miller. Fox corralled the rebound, but pushed the ball wide of net. In the 24 minute, SU earned a corner kick chance with junior Kelly Bailie sending the ball into the box. Sophomore Kristina Cristofori headed it toward the Raider goal, but it was knocked away by Colgate defender Heather McSherry.
Syracuse got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute when senior Maureen Tohidi carried the ball into the Raider half of the field and sent a cross into the box that was one-timed home by Bailie at the 37:45 mark. It was Bailie’s first goal as an Orangewoman.
SU took a 2-0 lead when junior Natalie Galas tried to cross the ball in front of the Colgate net and it deflected off of Raider defender Kellen Kroll past Miller for an own goal at 49:44.
The Raiders pulled to within one, 2-1, when a pass by Kelly Kuss was headed off the post by Carolyn Warhaftig. Kate Barrett scored on the rebound at the 58:53 mark. It was Barrett’s 17th tally of the season, a single-season Raider record.
Colgate turned up the offensive pressure in the last 30 minutes, but SU’s defense stiffened and did not let up the tying goal.
The Raiders outshot Syracuse 18-17 in the game including 11 by Barrett. The Orangewomen held the edge in corner kicks, 4-2.
Miller made nine saves in the match for the Raiders.
Syracuse will play at No. 15 Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 25 in its final BIG EAST Northeast Division contest of the season.
